Graduates can apply to enrol on the Full Time Diploma course or join Term 3 of the Blended Learning Diploma in Interior Design in order to gain the Level 5 Diploma validated by the University of Brighton (subject to the entry requirements)

A career based course for entry into the interior design industry, or to develop an existing career in the industry or related area

The KLC Certificate Interior Design is designed to provide students with the knowledge and necessary skills required for entry into the interior design industry. Successful completion of the course combined with work experience in the industry should provide students with the knowledge and experience needed to forge a professional career in residential interior design or other areas of the industry.

To fit in with differing commitments and lifestyles, this life enhancing course can be taken via two different study methods either over an intensive but manageable ten weeks or part time, two days a week in term time, spread over one year. It offers students a flexible route to combine their creativity with a strong interest in interior design with the possibility of opening up a fulfilling new career or enhancing an existing one. The many successful graduates working in the design industry or running their own design related business attest to the effectiveness of the course, the high levels of support from the inspirational tutors who are themselves professional interior designers, the practical skills and knowledge taught and the support of the Careers Service.

The course has been carefully programmed to ensure that every aspect of residential interior design has been comprehensively covered and that students graduate with the necessary skills and knowledge for the completion of an interior design project. The in house teaching team provide course cohesion while specialist and inspirational lectures are given by well-established figures within the interior design industry.

The extensive range of industry links that the school has built up over the years play a key part in helping to ensure that course content is up to date and our contacts are often a source of design projects, internships and employment as well as tutors and lecturers who play an important role in the delivery, teaching and learning experience of the students overall.

Certificate graduates have the option to take an additional four day Computer Aided Design training course on completion of their course. This follow up module, designed specifically for graduates of Certificate courses, will provide an invaluable opportunity to add an additional skill to their portfolio.

Careers

An excellent foundation for further study the KLC Certificate Course Interior Design also provides a broad range of career opportunities whether a graduate is building on existing industry experience or starting out in their career. There may be opportunities to work within an interior design practice or in a showroom specialising in materials, finishes or furniture. After obtaining appropriate experience, graduates may opt to work as freelance or independent designers, operating on a project basis for residential buildings. Alternatively they may specialise in decorating show houses or flats for property developers. In recent years it has proved a popular option for architects wishing to focus on interiors. Other career options include interior styling, property refurbishment, or perhaps using skills acquired to enter into journalism.

Students on the course are eligible to become student members of the British Institute of Interior Design with the advantage of valuable networking opportunities and a wide ranging programme of professional development.

Whatever career path students choose to follow, career advice from the KLC careers team is available to help graduates make a successful transition from course to workplace. Through our active job register they can be kept informed of employment opportunities.

Entry Requirements

No previous art or design experience is necessary, however students must be at least eighteen years old and mature students are particularly encouraged. Numbers on the course are strictly limited and entry is via an informal interview. The purpose of the interview is to give applicants the opportunity to see round the school and learn more about their chosen course and for the interviewer to assess the applicant's motivation for undertaking the course and to evaluate their commitment and ability to work under pressure.

English language ability must also be competent and a minimum score of 6 on the International English Language Testing System www.ielts.org or its equivalent is required. Students are expected to have a laptop for use during their studies.

NOTE: The interview is the first step in the application process for KLC's Certificate courses. Before arranging an interview, applicants should check that they are in a position to study full time (full time course) and are available to attend on all the term dates, have the funding available, are of sufficient age and have the required language ability. Computers

Students on KLC's Certificate courses are expected to use computers during their studies. These will be used for producing presentational material, for SketchUp and general written work. Important information relating to the course is sometimes communicated via email. For this reason, students should ensure that they are familiar with the general operation and use of computers (for example they should be able to confidently create, amend, save and distribute documents, and use email) before starting their course. Prior experience in using either PCs or Macs will be equally helpful. Full details of the expected level of ability will be provided at interview.

Qualification

The KLC Certificate Course is a career orientated course that introduces students to the essentials of good design and decoration and for both full and part time study has been programmed to ensure that students are introduced to every aspect of residential interior decoration and design and that there is plenty of opportunity for "hands on" practice.

Course Details

The course introduces students to the methodology and process of design to include taking the client brief, design analysis and development through to design implementation and evaluation. A particularly inspirational part of the curriculum focuses on conceptual work and accessing creativity. Students are given an appreciation of how colour, texture and pattern work together and how to apply this knowledge with confidence to create attractive decorative schemes.

In keeping with the practical KLC approach, emphasis is also placed on technical understanding to include spatial awareness and analysis with consideration for traffic flow, ergonomics, lighting and the specific requirements relating to kitchen and bathroom design. An appreciation of history of styles helps to inform students' own design work while sessions on environmental issues, design trends and inspirational talks from professional interior designers are similarly influential.

Students also learn about the production of technical drawings, freehand sketches, rendered visuals and presentation boards to illustrate design decisions and decorative schemes and effective verbal presentation skills are also encouraged.

In addition students are also given an overview of the legal and regulatory environment along with an understanding of the day to day administrative procedures involved in running a professional design practice.

Students will work on three design projects during the course of their studies which will cover both decorative and technical aspects of interior design. These projects will allow students to put into practice the knowledge and skills they have learnt, develop creativity and build confidence. In addition they will undertake two research projects on the history and development of interior design and a second on window treatments and soft furnishings.

The course is delivered full time over ten weeks or part time, two days a week over three terms, each of ten weeks. The courses are based at KLC's studios at Chelsea Harbour and each day is from 10.00am-4.00pm although students also have to undertake a considerable amount of work outside these hours to complete assignments, course and project work and to undertake independent study.

Illustrated talks by leading experts, projects and workshops under the guidance of practising professionals and visits to showrooms specialising in lighting and kitchen and bathroom design and to the V&A Museum are all included in the syllabus.
