A Whole lot of Hope

KLC News • 3 February, 2012

We were delighted to hear that KLC Garden Design Graduate, Matthew Childs, is one of two graduates who have had their concept gardens accepted for the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Matthew’s Garden is called 'Light at the end of the tunnel' and the theme is hope. The journey through the garden starts with a shaded, confined tunnel-like space representing a period of trauma. However, there is clearly a path ahead and, as the visitor walks down this path, they are rewarded with more space, light and a growing sense of hope.

Matthew said the inspiration for his garden came from being badly injured in the bombing at Edgware Road station on 7th July 2005. ”When I was carried out of the underground from darkness into light, I felt a great sense of hope and this continued to grow with the support I received throughout my recovery. The bombings have placed a new perspective on life for me and I feel I owe it to those people who did not survive the attacks to make the most of the chance I have been given.”

The London bombings and his recovery prompted Matthew to change his career and fulfil his dream of becoming a garden designer. Matthew graduated from KLC in 2009 and has established his own garden design business - visit www.matthewchildsdesign.co.uk to see his work. He is currently looking for sponsorship for his garden.
