To offer a professional course delivered in a unique, friendly and stimulating format and environment, and to use educators / practising professionals for tuition. We are committed to developing the creative potential of all our students. All course content is regularly updated to ensure that training is relevant to the exacting needs of the industry.

Learning objectives will be included in all project briefs upon which your work will be assessed. All work submitted by you will be assessed unless clearly otherwise indicated.

For any academic concerns, students should contact a course tutor or, indeed, any member of the academic team. For personal concerns, please contact the Student Welfare team. For any other queries regarding living in London etc, the Student Support Officer, or Student Support Administrator will be pleased to help you. For financial queries or concerns, please contact the Senior Registrar.

Your Commitment to Us

In order for the school to function smoothly and to ensure your own and our staff's health and safety, all students are required to adhere to the following rules:

1. Personal Conduct

1.1 As a general principle, students are expected to maintain, at all times, a high standard of personal conduct in their relations with staff, other students, visitors to the school, industry contacts, and with employees of, and visitors to the Design Centre Chelsea Harbour.

1.2 No student of the school shall disrupt or impede, or attempt to disrupt or impede, the activities and functions of the school.

1.3 The use of mobile phones is prohibited in the Presentation Room, corridors and the reception area. Mobile phones may only be used in studios during break times, and must be turned off and put away at all other times.

1.4 No student shall damage, deface, or knowingly misappropriate the property of other students, or of the school.

1.5 Admittance to lectures will be denied to students arriving late.

1.6 Students must inform Reception by 10am on a daily basis if they are unable to be at school during a course working day. A student who is absent between 2 and 7 calendar days, must submit a self-certification form (available on the SSS). For absences longer than 7 calendar days, a student must submit a medical certificate.

1.7 Should a student need to be away from their coursework for either medical or personal reasons, prior to any leave of absence, an absence form must be completed and given to their Course Tutor, Course Leader or a member of the Student Support or Student Welfare team for discussion.

1.8 If a student has zero attendance and the school has no knowledge at all as to the student's whereabouts, the school will write to the student expressing concern and asking for assurance as to the health and well-being of the student.

1.9 Students are responsible for identifying and familiarising themselves with missed coursework.

1.10 Except in exceptional circumstances, messages cannot be taken for students by school staff.

1.11 Smoking is prohibited on the premises.

1.12 With the exception of water, all food and drink must be consumed within the studios, where great care must be taken to safeguard students' work from damage.

1.13 Students are not to use any form of texting, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Skype or any other form of internet communications during studio hours.

1.14 As a mark of respect to students and tutors, English must be spoken in studio.

1.15 Students must attend all teaching sessions / activities relating to the course, undertake all assessment submissions and attend meetings and other activities as required by KLC. At least 80% attendance and participation is compulsory in order to achieve the level of knowledge and skills necessary to graduate with a potential award. KLC reserves the right to withdraw a student from the course if they do not attend and participate.

1.16 Use of laptops, tablets or recording devices during presentations is prohibited. Any note-taking must be done by hand.

2. Academic Policy

2.1 No student shall make use of unfair means in any test have in his or her possession at a test any book, paper, or other material relevant to the test unless specifically authorised. No member of KLC staff shall assist a candidate to make use of such unfair means.

2.2 No student shall forge or falsify or knowingly make use of any certificate or other document attesting to academic achievement, nor shall they knowingly make false statements concerning standing or concerning results in examinations.

2.3 All submitted project work must be the student's original work with specific sources referenced in a bibliography.

2.4 Module-based projects, reference books and essays must be submitted and passed.

2.5 Students' work can be used by KLC for marketing purposes only.

2.6 The group project is the property of KLC. Group project work may be copied for use in individual portfolios (Diploma only).

2.7 The School reserves the right not to issue you with your award, and can require you to cease attending your course, if you are in breach of our academic and personal misconduct procedures.

2.8 The nature of study relies upon attendance at all sessions in order to complete each module, except in extenuating circumstances.

2.9 All students are required to prepare for and take part in the end of year Exhibition.

3. Data Protection

3.1 Data supplied for admissions purposes or generated whilst enrolled as a student, or thereafter as an alumnus is held on computer and used in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

4. Health & Safety (including Fire)
Students are required to:

4.1. Report any accident to reception.

4.2 Sign in and out at reception each time they enter or leave the building.

4.3 Notify reception if absent.

4.4 Refer access requests by strangers to a member of school staff.

4.5 Inform a member of staff of any suspicious or potentially dangerous behaviour.

4.6 Familiarise themselves with the school's fire regulations.

4.7 Participate in fire drills when requested by a member of school staff.

4.8 Refrain from attending school whilst suffering from any infectious disease.

4.9 Provide a medical certificate for any absence in excess of three days.

4.10 Label property and valuables.

4.11 All students should notify the school of any illness or health issues that may affect their safety or ability to complete their course of study.

5. Use of School Equipment

5.1 No student shall damage, deface, or knowingly misappropriate any property of the school.

5.2 Students are responsible for all library books withdrawn on their library cards until these are received back by reception staff and checked back into the library.

5.3 Library books must be returned within the specified loan period.

5.4 All safety procedures demonstrated by school staff with regard to the use of equipment and materials must be adhered to by students.

6. Information Technology

6.1 Software lent by the school must be returned and all traces removed from any computer owned by the student at the end of the course/year/period of study or when requested to do so.

6.2 Students shall ensure that all the requirements of the agreements or contracts under which software is held by the KLC School of Design will be maintained.

6.3 Students shall ensure the security and commercial confidentiality of software released or loaned, and will not take any further copies from it, or knowingly permit others to do so.

6.4 School resources must not be used to access or disseminate pornographic, sexist or racist material, via the email, Internet or any other network connection.

6.5 Students shall not use any of the school resources or facilities to assist or in support of any illegal activity.

6.6 Students should be aware that activity and hardware on the Wireless LAN will be monitored, and acknowledge that they will be held accountable for any misuse identified from hardware registered to them.

6.7 Students shall not knowingly introduce computer viruses, and must take all reasonable precautions to prevent their spread. All laptops or other equipment connected to the wireless LAN will have full anti-virus software installed, and anti-virus software will be running with the latest virus definitions file.

7. Student Complaint Process

7.1 Informal discussion: the majority of concerns raised by a student can be resolved informally. Students are encouraged to raise issues with staff directly or through their student representatives. Student representatives attend regular meetings where issues of concern can be raised and they should seek to resolve the problem without the need for formal action by the student.

7.2 Stage 2, Early Resolution: If a complaint cannot be resolved to the student's satisfaction through informal discussion, a Stage 2 student complaints form (obtained from Reception or on the SSS) should be completed and sent to the Course Leader. The Course Leader will decide whether there is (a) reasonable justification for the complaint or (b) there is none, or (c) the complaint is not within this procedure and requires to be dealt with in another way. If the complaint is found to be justified, the student will be informed of any action which has been taken, or will be taken, in order to remedy the complaint.

7.3 Stage 3, Mediation: If a student is still not satisfied with the outcome of Stage 2, they should contact the Students Complaints Officer. It is important that you give sufficient detail of the complaint as it will be considered by this member of staff without prior knowledge of the matter. Please see Course Information in your Student Handbook for further information.

7.4 Stage 4, Review: If the student remains dissatisfied with the outcome of Stage 3, then they may refer the matter to the Principal. The Student completes Stage 4 Review Form (obtained from Reception or on the SSS) and submits it to the Principal. Please see Course Information in your Student Handbook for further information.

8. Academic Misconduct Process

8.1 In the event of a reported academic misconduct concern, the matter is referred to the Course Leader and an informal discussion takes place between the Course Leader and the student who is alleged to have committed academic misconduct

8.2 Should the incident be deemed to be one of alleged academic misconduct, the Course Leader will make a written report to the DOS who will investigate the suspicion and determine whether there is reasonable evidence of poor academic practice or academic misconduct.

8.3 The Academic Misconduct Procedure will follow the process for Poor Academic Practice or Academic Misconduct as outlined in the diagram in your Course Handbook.

8.4 Students have the right of appeal against the outcomes of any investigation of alleged academic misconduct. The regulations and procedures governing any such appeal are set out in the University of Brighton's General Examination Assessment Regulations (GEAR), Section H.

9. Personal Misconduct Process

9.1 The member of staff or student who suspects personal misconduct reports suspicion to the Course Leader.

9.2 The Course Leader has an informal meeting with member of staff or student

9.3 The Course Leader will make a written report to DOS who will investigate the suspicion and determine whether there is reasonable evidence of personal misconduct.

Students have the right of appeal against the outcomes of any investigation of alleged personal misconduct. The regulations and procedures governing any such appeal are set out in your course handbook

10. Academic Appeal Process

10.1 Early Resolution: the majority of concerns raised by a student can and should be resolved informally so that students may continue with their studies without worry. A student can discuss concerns about an assessment outcome with a tutor / Course Leader and they should seek to resolve the problem without the need for formal action.

10.2 Formal Stage: If a student is dissatisfied with the outcome at Early Resolution, they should apply to the University of Brighton (GEAR, Section H) and request form Academic Appeals form Stages 1 and 2.

10.3 Students have the right to access the external complaint scheme at the OIA (Office of the Independent Adjudicator, http://www.oiahe.org.uk/).

11. Drugs and Alcohol

11.1 KLC operates a common-sense approach to alcohol. Any student obviously under the influence of alcohol will not be permitted to participate in school activities on that day.

11.2 KLC operates a zero-tolerance approach to drugs, their use or possession.

12. Environment and Recycling
To reduce environmental impact, please try and observe the following:

12.1 Plan your use of cardboard, paper and other materials to ensure that waste is kept to a minimum.

12.2 Reuse materials where possible and reserve surplus and off-cuts for future use.

12.3 When no longer useful, dispose of recyclable materials in the designated bins provided in studio.

13. English Language

13.1 If there was a concern over your standard of English at Interview, you may be given a place conditional on this improving. If you experience language difficulties, you should discuss this with your Course Tutor. There will be no allowance made for this when assessing work.

14. Student and Course Handbooks

14.1 All students shall read and comply with the information contained in the Student Handbook and the Course Handbook.
