Santosh Barmola

Age:             36
Nationality:   Indian
Course:        Full Time Diploma Interior Design

What was your professional background prior to KLC?

I started working as a professional model at the age of 19, which developed into a full time acting career by the time I was 27. But I always knew that it was not a long term career for me and I felt the need to find something away from all the buzz around me. It was not until I was 30 however, that I had some time in between my contracts in which I decided to venture into spatial design and realized how much I enjoyed the process. My first project took two years to complete, followed by another short commercial project which then led to my decision of doing a qualification in interior design.

When you were looking for courses, what was it about this course that appealed to you?

The one thing that appealed the most to me was how the entire course was designed to help someone like me understand the professional aspects of designing and then apply it to my creative side, enabling me to break through into the industry. My initial interest was followed by a trip to London, in which I had the opportunity to meet the wonderful Course Leader, Kevin in an interview who gave me an overview of the course which instilled my faith in joining the course.

How does the course fit around your lifestyle?

Since the course is so intensive, I have had to put on hold everything that I was doing before, as it takes up most of my time in London. However I strongly feel one needs to give the most, in order to get the most out of something, and this course can give you SO much, if you’re willing to make the sacrifices required.

What are you enjoying most about the course?

I love the whole process of working in studios and how everyone is different from each other. I think the idea of a ‘collaboration of minds’ excites me the most and so I am also looking forward to the group project coming in the next term. Considering I am an international student, it was particularly interesting to be able to learn the ‘History of Design’ in Europe.

Where do you look for inspiration?

I believe because of my background in acting I have always observed everything around me very keenly. This comes back to me in various forms and shapes from time to time and inspires me along the research process of design.
