An introduction to the basic principles of garden design

This day provides the perfect concise introduction to the world of garden design. Even with the prevalence of design in today’s media, confusion surrounds even some of the most basic principles. 

Whether you just want to gain a better appreciation of the subject for your own garden projects, or are thinking about studying further, this practical day provides a compelling, comprehensive and most enjoyable introduction.

The syllabus includes:

  • Principles of design
  • Practical planning
  • How to choose a style
  • Fundamentals of successful planting
  • First steps to creating a masterplan

Refreshments and a delicious light lunch will be provided on the day

Tutor Biography:

Matthew Childs trained at KLC College of Design at Hampton Court Palace, attaining a diploma in Garden Design with Honours, and was awarded ‘Top Student of the Year’.  He also attained the RHS level 2 certificate in horticulture. In 2012, Matthew received a gold medal and ‘Best Conceptual Garden’ at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower show for his garden ‘Light at the end of the tunnel’.  In 2013 he returned to the Hampton Court Palace Flower show with a show garden for Ecover which was awarded a gold medal and ‘Best in Show’.
