Spend a special day with The English Garden magazine at KLC School of Design, in an exclusive reader event on 13 October 2017. Tapping into the expertise of two leading plant specialists, learn how to select the best trees and shrubs for your garden, and how to make the most of them at home. Breakfast and lunch complete the day.
A day of informative and inspirational talks to help you choose trees and shrubs, from Matthew Childs and Mark Straver.
9.30 – ARRIVAL, COFFEE AND PASTRIES
10.00 - Selecting Trees and Shrubs and using them in Your Design (Inspirational talk to include evergreen and deciduous, height, spread and preferred growing conditions. Key attributes and uses within the garden such as structure, focal points and screening.
11.00 - BREAK
11.15 - Exploring the attributes of trees and shrubs (Workshop creating a mood board of the attributes of trees and shrubs for a chosen garden theme for example, Mediterranean, Exotic, Japanese, Contemporary, Traditional etc).
12.30 - LUNCH
1.30 – The Possibilities are endless (Inspirational talk from a leading tree specialist on choosing trees and shrubs for your garden – Examples of trees sourced for aspirational private residential/commercial projects such as The Garden Bridge planned for London and trees sourced for previous Chelsea flower show gardens. Practical advice on how to plant and maintain trees and shrubs - watering, feeding, treating pests and diseases and pruning)

2.45 - Planting Plans (Workshop - tree and shrub selection for your own garden – Sketch plans to illustrate location of trees and shrubs around garden along with a basic maintenance schedule).
FINISH - 4.15
A KLC School of Design alumni, Matthew’s design style features bold hard landscaping complemented with a tapestry of rich and full planting. He has won gold and silver-gilt medals at Hampton Court and Chelsea.
Mark comes from a long line of nurserymen and has set up several successful horticultural businesses, including Hortus Loci, in 2011. He sources trees and shrubs from around the world and supplies them to many prestigious private and commercial landscape projects and top designers' show gardens.
Breakfast pastries and coffee along with a delicious light lunch will be provided on the course.
