In October 2017, KLC launched a design competition in partnership with British Design house, Andrew Martin. Andrew Martin designs, manufactures and distributes fabrics, wallpapers, furniture, cushions and home accessories.
The competition was presented to the FT Diploma Sep 17 cohort, requiring them to design one piece of furniture that could be added to the Andrew Martin range and introduced to a global market.
CEO of Andrew Martin International, Michael Durbridge, made his way to KLC to announce the winner and runner up of the design competition. Michael addressed the FT Diploma students by congratulating them for their inspiring and “brilliant” designs.
He admitted that the team initially thought it would be a fairly straight forward process and that they would be able to pick out the winning design upon receiving all entries – they were wrong. The process of selecting a winner took the Andrew Martin team several hours, multiple shortlistings and discussions to select an overall winner.
The runner up of the competition will be awarded £300 to spend in the Andrew Martin store, tickets to the Andrew Martin ‘Designer of the Year’ Awards in October, an invitation to lunch with the team and Martin Waller (Founder) as well as a one month internship at Andrew Martin upon completion of the Diploma HE course.
The winner will be awarded £1000 to spend in the Andrew Martin store, tickets to the ‘Designer of the Year’ Awards, an invitation to lunch with the team and Founder, Martin Waller, where the process of turning a design on paper into a product will take place, as well as opportunities upon competition of the Diploma course.
Mike Durbridge introduced the winning design as follows, “The team was inspired by this design. We see a real renaissance in illumination and using light within furniture. The design was inventive, quirky and different and this is what Andrew Martin likes to pride themselves on. This furniture design is a piece that could eventually become part of a collection.”
Congratulations to the winner of the 2017/18 Andrew Martin Design Competition, Laura Leech.
Laura Leech is also KLC’s recent Bursary recipient. The KLC bursary is offered to assist with the development of her creative potential through providing the necessary skills and confidence in design communication to articulate her ideas and share them with others. This bursary will assist Laura to complete her design education and launch her career within the interior design industry.
A congratulations must also be given to the runner up, Jana Hughes. Michael Durbridge has described this design as “a great design around marble, brass, furniture. It was precise, elegant and sophisticated and something we could see going beyond the physical product and perhaps a range/collection we could launch”.
We look forward to sharing further updates with you regarding the product development. Thank you to the Andrew Martin team and KLC Diploma students for their contribution to this successful project.
