KLC are collaborating with United in Design for an exciting competition

Published:

United in Design, an initiative set up in 2020 by interior designers Alexandria Dauley of Dauley Design and Sophie Ashby of Studio Ashby to tackle the design world’s diversity problem, has announced an annual competition with KLC School of Design. The aim is to find and nurture emerging design talent, with a particular appeal to designers from BAME backgrounds to apply. The winner will receive a sponsored place on a KLC Full or Part Time Certificate Residential Interior Design course starting in September 2021, whilst a One Week or Part Time Introductory Interior Design Short course will be given to the runner up.

“At KLC School of Design we are always searching for innovative designers of the future who challenge the norms and want to make a difference to the world,” said Jenny Gibbs, KLC’s founder. “We have always celebrated and valued diversity but recently have felt that we would like to take a much more proactive approach.”

To enter and win, the brief is to design a studio apartment for a media-driven couple in a major city. The brief reads “We would like you to imagine that a couple who are friends of yours, who know you have a good eye for interior design, have been in touch to ask you for some ideas for their apartment. The apartment can be in any major city you choose and we would like you to put together a montage of images and/or sketches that would give an idea of the sort of style and atmosphere you think might suit your clients and the property.” The brief goes on to ask entrants to concede the atmosphere of the space, what the wow factor of it is, and the impact of sustainability, amongst other things.

“We are really excited to be partnering with KLC for this competition and more broadly,” said Alexandria, “to take another step toward shifting the status quo of the industry which should always be driven by talent rather than access.”

The entries must be uploaded to the United in Design website by midnight on May 16th, when they will be assessed by a judging panel of Sophie Ashby and Alexandria Dauley of United in Design, KLC Founder Jenny Gibbs and KLC Certificate Course Leader, Ally Wates.
