Unlike college, the real world of work is not neatly packaged, structured or controlled. KLC courses have always been rooted in the practical and relevant skills required for working in the interior design industry, which is why integrated work experience is a unique feature of our qualification courses.
However, due to a variety of distance issues, health reasons or visa restrictions, some students may not be able to undertake actual work experience and we were determined that they shouldn’t miss out on this valuable part of the course!
Hosted on KLC’s cutting edge VLE (virtual learning environment) this weeklong experience replicates the activities of a working design studio - ‘Studio KLC’ - and immerses the students into a bustling agency with multiple concurrent projects at different stages of completion. Each day requires them to join a different department and do their best to help out at the business end of interior design.
Interactive materials include daily videos
Studio KLC's activities are typical of a mid-size London interior design / architecture practice, and their work experience programme requires five days attendance online.
As a student it is likely that you have focussed on research, concept work, design and visualisation skills, and space planning. Studio KLC complements this learning by building your understanding of professional practice and transferrable working skills. Each day is directed by the Studio KLC Senior Designer, there are problems to solve and a wide variety of practical activities to work through at real world pace – you will need to be fast and flexible!
Studio KLC interns learn by doing, and the syllabus includes:
- Surveying and measuring
- Sourcing to a brief in your local area
- Schedules and specifications
- Finance including estimating and invoicing
- Ordering products and materials
- Professionalism and problem-solving
- Editing and presenting
- Fees and charging
- Health and safety regulations
This course is designed to build confidence and familiarise you with real world practice, to help with the transition from student to designer, and to make you a more attractive employee.
This captured course can be taken at any time and is accessed via KLC's interactive and intuitive Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The course is designed for students who already have a solid base of interior design training. To take part all you need is a digital camera (or smartphone camera), a PC or laptop, and a good broadband internet connection. You will be set a recommended, optional challenge: a sourcing day trip that adapts to most locations – urban or rural – so be prepared to get out and about too. There is also a pack of preparation materials to complete before the programme begins.
If you want to achieve the award of a 'KLC Certificate of Work Experience' you will be asked to make a single submission of coursework at the end of the programme.
