Diploma in Interior Design -

Christopher West

Interior Designer

What was your background before you started at KLC?
I grew up in Bristol and studied at the Bristol Cathedral School, and then went on to do a Graphic design BTEC at City of Bristol college. After renovating a bedroom in my parents in house in 2012, I decided to explore Interior design and took a 5 week crash course at Ivy House Design School, ran by Sheila Dunlop in the idyllic, Georgian city of Bath. It was a massive turning point and inspired my decision to move to London and pursue a career in the industry. I had been recommended KLC from a friend who had previously worked as a tutor at the school, after the open day I was sure that it was the place for me to begin my journey in the industry.

Why did you decide to study interior design?
I have always been interested in the arts rather than academic subjects and had a strong appreciation for the way a space feels and looks, as this would always affect the places and restaurants I chose to visit. I also have a passion for clothes and fashion but just as much the feel, texture and smell of materials, as the aesthetics of an Interior or an outfit.

What did you think of the course?
At KLC they have an extremely professional approach that provides you with the necessary attributes and outlook to work in the industry. The Full Time Diploma Interior Design has a pragmatic nature that covers all the different aspects of interior design with a well planned, diverse range of projects. Due to the busy schedule/timetable, it requires a diligent work ethic and highlights the importance of organisation and time management.

What are your design interests / strengths?
I feel that my strengths lie in decorative schemes, sourcing, teamwork and staying true to the brief requirements. I am a good listener and use constructive criticism as a positive. I aspire to be involved in the complete interior design process rather than specialise in a particular area. My personal style/taste is a fairly classical style that uses traditional forms with a twist, often through exotic colours and materials.

I am inspired by…
Classical forms, methods and perceptions. I often look to nature and sensual atmospheres for conceptual driven designs.

My favourite interior is…
Yves Saint Lauren’s Parisian flat.
