KLC Blended Learning Diploma Interior Design -

Jessie McDonald

Interior Designer

What were you doing before KLC and why did you decide to attend KLC?
I have a degree in Human Resources and Business from Oxford Brookes University. I was the manager of a Human Resources team in a Private Bank at the time of looking for an interior design school. I did a fair amount of research into different Interior Design colleges, and was impressed by the reputation and vocational aspects of KLC's courses.

I did the one week Introduction to Interior Design at KLC (which I would thoroughly recommend). I even did a spot of work experience with the Interior Stylists for Channel 4's 'The Home Show'. It got to the point where I couldn't ignore the design itch any further, so decided to join the Blended Learning Diploma to embark on my professional studies.

Can you identify some of the highlights of your time at KLC?
I absolutely loved the course and it totally exceeded my expectations in terms of covering such a wide range of design skills and in-depth knowledge. The blended learning route was great for someone like me who was unable to commit to one year's full time study as it fitted around work and other demands. One of the highlights for me included the practical residential project. Taking a real client brief and turning it into a design solution was such fantastic learning. The CAD training was also really thorough and helped make spatial planning so much easier. Another added highlight has been meeting the tutors and some lovely like-minded people from the course, who I have stayed in touch with.

How has your career evolved since KLC?
I have been really fortunate and moved straight into working on a freelance basis since leaving KLC for a couple of designers. The last year has been focused on working mainly for Caz Myers Design, a studio based in North London, that specialises in the mid to high end residential market. I have had such a wonderful start to my professional career working with some really talented people on some very exciting and diverse projects.

What are some of your recent projects?
Current projects for me include leading the design for a family house in Crouch End, a commercial warehouse workspace in Hackney, and assisting with the design and installation of a large family house in Kensington. Past projects include assisting on an apartment in Highgate, a River Thames duplex apartment, a large villa on the island of Ibiza, Spain and a Georgian apartment, in Edinburgh.
