Interior Designer
What were you doing before KLC and why did you decide to attend KLC?
For over nine years I worked within the property industry in varying capacities. The highlights were working on developing, refurbishing and gaining planning permission on two adjacent properties in Pall Mall, London, as well as putting together a proposal for an integrated resort scheme in Mauritius. My job often found me working with architects and designers; however, having studied for a Fine Art Degree I missed having hands on creativity within my career.
Retraining interior design seemed a logical move to combine my knowledge of property, together with my degree. I visited several interior design schools but found the graduate work at KLC the most inspiring and perhaps more importantly, I immediately felt at home there (even at the interview). With the course being vocational and well-connected within the industry I made the right decision for my career.
Can you identify some of the highlights of your time at KLC?
Handing in our final project and the sense of individual, as well as group achievement was unforgettable and the close friendships forged are still strong today. Having renowned members of the industry give motivational talks was a source of continued inspiration.
The greatest highlight for me had to be at graduation as Sue Timney announced my name as the winner of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) Award for Communication and Creativity.
How has your career evolved since KLC?
The day after graduation I began a three month internship with Justin Van Breda (JVB), which evolved into a permanent position. Renowned for furniture collections as much as interior design, working for JVB opened up avenues that I had not previously considered, including furniture design for which I have found a passion. I now work on high end residential interior design, as well as bespoke furniture and product development.
What are some of your recent projects?
Within furniture design I have updated the JVB classic furniture collection, creating - The Legacy Collection which launched at Decorex 2013.On the interior design side a 3,500 sq ft private residence, W8 which is now in the fit out stage, and a private residence in SW1 of 2,500 sq ft which is currently at the concept stage.
